Two very different reasons to cry

1. This morning Vermont Public Radio aired a segment about a 16-year-old Pakistani girl who was flogged for refusing to marry a Taliban soldier. The event, which took place in March, was recorded on someone's mobile phone. VPR broadcast the audio. I still haven't gotten the sound of this girl's cries out of my head.

The New York Times covered it here.

2. Today the Vermont legislature overrode Governor Jim Douglas' veto on a bill legalizing gay marriage.

A friend of mine said that one of his friends was at the State House today to show support for the measure. When the override was confirmed, she called her partner on her cell phone and proposed.
